India's
biggest Cancer Hospital with World Class Cancer Care Facilities.
Conceived
as a dream by the ladies of Inner Wheel Club of Ahmedabad
and nurtured by the Governor of Gujarat, these efforts to
ameliorate suffering and agony of patients with cancer, crystallised
into formation of “The Gujarat Cancer Society “ on April 2,
1961.
The
Late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi commissioned the M.P.
Shah Cancer Hospital on December 14, 1966. The M.P. Shah Cancer
Hospital grew, developed and then urderwent metamorphosis
as ‘The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute’ (M.P. Shah
Cancer Hospital) as an autonomous body on February 1,
1972. Today, the Institute is a 450-bedded comprehensive cancer
centre with various departments including Surgical Oncology,
Nursing & Allied Services, Physiotherapy, Medical Oncology,
Paediatric Oncology, Gynec oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiodiagnosis,
Anesthesiology, Research Wing, Laboratory Medicine, Preventive
oncology, Stoma Clinic, Speech Therapy, Prosthesis, Social
Service, Cancer related Health Check-up, and general administration.
The
Institute also offers services in pre-and peri-operative period
in respiratory physiotherapy and runs a very active palliative
care and after care department. The Institute is equipped
with ultramodern sophisticated facilities like, CT Scan, Ultrasonography,
Cobalt Unit, Liner Accelerators, Mammography, High Dose Selectron,
Microselectron, Flexible fiber optic G.I. and bronchoscopy
with Video Endoscope pleural, Colposcope, Laser Therapy unit,
H.P.L.C. system, Electron Microscope, Confocal Imaging system
and Flow-cytometer etc.
The
Institute has established a modern 25 bedded Pediatric Oncology
Center . The Institute is recognised by UICC, WHO and also
recognised as a Regional Cancer Centre by Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Cancer
Research Activities with International Reputation.
The
institute undertakes state of the art clinical research in
the field of Cell Biology, Molecular Endocrinology and Biochemistry.
In addition to conducting research in basic problems related
to cancer, the thrust is on evolving clinical applicability
of various research methodologies. The work has provided useful
parameters for early diagnosis and better management of cancer
patients. Various research projects have been approved by
national as well as international agencies. Laboratory experiments
have revealed that there is a genotoxic effect with pan masala
and tobacco use. This work has received national and international
attention and is a strong weapon presented to Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in its fight
against wide spread use of tobacco for human consumption.
The
staff of the institute has published more than 600 research
papers in peer reviewed journals of national and international
repute. The institute is recognised by Gujarat University
as well as M.S. University of Baroda, for Ph.D. Degree. Its
staff members represent the institute at various conferences
in India and abroad. The staff members also hold important
positions in executive boards of various scientific societies
in the country.
