Most
of us feel fear and distress on learning the diagnosis of
cancer. When the victims are kids the diagnosis brings pain,
shock and frustration to the parents, relatives and friends.
Now the situation has changed. Several decades of successes
in the development of more effective treatment for children
with cancer provide one of the most gratifying stories in
the entire history of cancer therapy.
Occasionally
some parents wonder whether their child should be subjected
to the painful experiences of injection needles, drug therapy,
surgery, radiotherapy of various diagnostic procedures if
he is likely to survive only few more days. Their question
will be : Are there any chances for their child to become
normal again? The hopeful answer and information regarding
recent achievements in treatment success help to boost up
their moral and to change their attitude. In the schools and
colleges glorious results can be obtained by concentrating
on star batch pupils having potentially higher educational
abilities. Similarly for childhood cancer patients having
higher potential cure rates, better results may be obtained
by treating them at a specialized center.
By
providing the modern diagnostic, treatment and research facilities,
isolation cubes and laminar air flow beds to reduce the chances
of infection, intensive care units, reading area, play area,
indoor-outdoor games, specially trained medical-paramedical-social
workers team imparting love and warmth to the children such
centres with its pleasant atmosphere can alleviate pain fear
and anxiety of the children and their parents. Such Centres
will also help in collecting and compilling the data on the
incidence, type and treatment results for childhood cancers
in these part of the country. The interaction and exchange
of such information with the other scientists in India and
abroad may be useful for the worldwide fight against cancer.
Fortunately
the incidence of cancer in children is very less compared
to the cancer incidence in the adults. There will be approximately
one case of childhood cancer for every hundred cases of cancer
of the adults.
At
the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, Ahmedabad, approximately
350 new cases of Childhood cancers are recorded every
year. In the whole of Gujarat approximately 1200 new cases
of childhood cancers are estimated to occur every year.
Common
cancers seen in the children are: Leukaemia (Blood Cancer),
Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma, Brain Tumour, Soft Tissue and Bone
tumours, Wilm's Tumours etc. These Cancers are quite different
from the types of cancers seen in adult people and their response
to treatment is also different.
The
Gujarat Cancer Society was founded in 1961. Since then, the
Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, Ahmedabad, is providing
service to the people of Gujarat for The Cancer treatment
and research facilities. To extend and intensify this fight
against the cancer the Gujarat Cancer Society has set up a
new Paeadiatric Oncology Centres. This Centre is likely to
be the first of its kind in the whole of India.
Under
one roof it will provide all the modern facilities for diagnosis,
treatment and Research in the field of Paediatirc Oncology
at a very concessional rate. Treatment of Children with cancer
at such specializes centres is likely to significantly improve
the treatment results.
